Sunnah of the Prophet SAW - Two Phrases Beloved to God

The Prophet (pbuh) said:

“There are two phrases that are light on the tongue but heavy on the scale of rewards and are dear to the Gracious One. These are: Subhan Allah wa bi hamdih, “Glorified is Allah with all praise to Him,” and Subhan Allah al-`adheem, “Glorified is Allah, the Great.”
[Bukhari, Muslim & Tirmidhi]

What is especially beautiful about this specific remembrance is that these words are beloved to Allah- meaning if we are successful in saying them throughout the day, that He is pleased with us inshAllah! As it is only He that helps us in remembering Him

Sunnah of the Prophet - Three Surahs Before Bed

Aisha narrated that

when the Prophet (pbuh) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times.

Ikhlas, And Ways To Obtain It

(The Brunei Times Islamia)

Imam Nawawi ARBA’IN AN-NAWAWI

It is narrated on the authority of the Leader of Believers (Amirul Mu’minin), Abu Hafs ‘Umar bin al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, may peace and blessing be upon him, say:

‘Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyat), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated’.”

[Hadith narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari and Imam Muslim]

This hadith (saying of Prophet) was said by Prophet Muhammad at the time when a man migrated from Mekah to Madinah during the Hijrah for the sake of marrying someone and not for the sake of Islam.

It is considered to be one of the greatest hadiths in Islam.

Imam Shafi’i said, “This Hadith is one third of the knowledge of Islam; related to about 70 topics of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence).”

Hikmah

This hadith emphasizes ikhlas (purity in intention – absolute sincerity - to be truthful and honest to Allah alone, performing an act solely for Allah’s sake whereby no other witness except Allah is sought).

Ikhlas is one of the conditions of accepting good deeds. The other condition is that the actions must be done in accordance with the Shariah (Islamic guidance) as it will be explained in the fifth hadith.

This can be seen in the shahadah (testimony of faith):

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah” is the ikhlas - ensuring that we do things for the sake of Allah and Allah alone.

I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” - the Sunnah is the manifestation of the Quran - the Messenger of Allah is our example, our best model to follow. Following his Sunnah in our ibadah, Akhlaq (ethics), and Muamalat (dealings) ensures that we are acting in accordance with the Shariah.

To achieve ikhlas, we have to avoid shirk (associating others with Allah, which causes insincerity). Al-Imam al- Harawi said the root cause for insincerity (or shirk) is self-desire (al-hawa). Therefore no action should be done because of selfdesire.

Imam al-Harawi states that there are 7 types of selfdesires:
  • To make oneself appear good in the hearts of others.
  • To seek the praises of others.
  • To avoid being blamed by others.
  • To seek the glorification of others.
  • To seek the wealth or money of others.
  • To seek the services or love of others.
  • To seek the help of others for oneself.
Ways to obtain ikhlas:
  • Do righteous deeds - the more good deeds we do and hence get closer to Allah, the more sincere we will be.
  • Before we do any deed we should firstly seek knowledge (‘ilm) - our actions/deeds should be guided by knowledge so that we do them in accordance to the Shariah.
  • Do not give false impressions - do not make others believe that an action we did was good when it was not.
  • Al-Imam Ahmad said, “Before you do anything, check your intention (niyyat) - ask yourself before performing an action: ‘Is it for the sake of Allah?’”
There are four things that contradict ikhlas:
  • Ma’siat - committing sins - this will weaken our ikhlas.
  • Shirk - associating others with Allah.
  • Riya’ - performing an ‘ibadah with the intention of showing off to others.
  • Nifaq – hypocrisy.
Even though we must always make sure that our actions do not deviate from ikhlas, there are actions, which are automatically considered that of good intentions. For example, seeking knowledge in Islam, helping the community, doing da’wah, etc.

Surely, our life is completely nothing, unless we dedicate every deed only to Allah, Owner of our lives.

Sunnah of the Prophet SAW - Go Early to the Friday Prayers

The Prophet (pbuh) said,

“Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour i.e. early), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah’s cause); and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba.”

[Bukhari]

Here the Prophet (pbuh) tells us that the earlier one goes to the Friday prayer, the better! Also remember that every step taken to the mosque one is rewarded for; also there are extra rewards for praying in the first row; and there is an hour on friday in which du’a is not rejected, so we are able to take that time to make dua inshAllah.

Sunnah of the Prophet SAW - Stay Silent During The Khutbah

The Prophet (pbuh) recommended that one remains silent during the Friday Khutba.

[Bukhari]

He also told us,

"When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba.”

Sunnah of the Prophet SAW - Cut your nails

“Five things are part of one’s Fitra…” and the Prophet (pbuh) mentioned that trimming the nails is one of them.

[Muslim]

In a hadith by Imam Muslim, the Prophet (pbuh) stated that we should not leave the acts of Fitra [natural disposition] for more than 40 days, as that is a lack of hygiene. We should try to keep our nails reasonably short at all times to prevent dirt from going underneath them.

Maksudnya: "Sahaja aku berpuasa sunat bulan Rejab kerana Allah Ta'ala."

Sunnah of The Prophet SAW - Be Gentle to Your Mother

About mothers, Prophet (pbuh) said:

"If you speak gently to her & feed her, you will enter the Garden if you avoid major wrong actions.'

[Bukhari]

The Prophet (pbuh) here gave us to practical things with regards to our mothers:

1) Speak gentle words: we can even say nice things such as we love her, or she looks nice today, or thank you for the many things she has done for us.

2) Feed her: here we can offer to cook for her, or take her out for a meal.

When the Prophet (pbuh) would leave his home, he would say:

O God, Forgive Me When I Whine

Forgive Me, Ahmed Bukhatir

Solat Rawatib

1) 2 rakaat sebelum sembahyang fardu Subuh
2) 2 rakaat sebelum sembahyang fardu Zuhur
3) 2 rakaat sesudah sembahyang fardu Zuhur
4) 2 rakaat sesudah sembahyang fardu Maghrib
5) 2 rakaat sesudah sembahyang fardu Isya'
6) Sembahyang sunat witir sesudah sembahyang fardu Isya'
7) 2 rakaat sebelum sembahyang fardu Juma'at
8) 2 rakaat sesudah sembahyang fardu Juma'at

Sembahyang Rawatib yang Sunat Ghairu Muakkadah ada 5 perkara:

1) 2 rakaat lagi sebelum sembahyang fardu Zuhur
2) 2 rakaat lagi sesudah sembahyang fardu Zuhur
3) 4 rakaat sebelum sembahyang fardu Asar
4) 2 rakaat sebelum sembahyang fardu Maghrib
5) 2 rakaat sebelum sembahyang fardu Isya'

Sembahyang sunat sebelum sembahyang fardu dikatakan 'Qabliyyah' (قَبْلِيَّةً) dan sembahyang sunat sesudah sembahyang fardu dikatakan 'Ba'diyyah' (بَعْدِيَّةً).

Niatnya:

Ertinya: "Sahaja aku sembahyang sunat Subuh/Zuhur/Asar/Maghrib/Isya' dua rakaat Qabliyyah/Ba'diyyah kerana Allah Ta'ala."

Ringkasannya:

2 – Rakaat Solat Sunat Muakkadah
2 – Rakaat Solat Sunat Ghairu Muakkadah

Lafaz Salam - Di Luar Dan Di Dalam Sembahyang

Sunnah of the Prophet SAW - Salaam to everyone

The Prophet (pbuh) said:

“…give the greeting of salaam to those whom you know and those whom you do not know”
