Praise be to Allaah and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger and upon his family and companions.
It is that time of the year where almost all students are preparing themselves to give their worldly exams.In this highly competitive world of cut throat competition it is very important that we muslims fulfill our obligation of seeking knowledge and try to excel in walks of life. For this very purpose I have compiled a small article which gives a few guidelines to Muslim students on how to go about. For easy understanding have divided my article in 3 main parts of things to do before, during and after exams hope the points mentioned will be beneficial to the readers. May Allah(swt) guide us all to the straight path
Before Exams
Prepare well:Tie Your Camel First
One day Allah's Messenger (saw) noticed a Bedouin leaving his camel without tying it.He asked the Bedouin,"Why don't you tie down your camel?"The Bedouin answered, "I placed my trust in Allah."At that, the Prophet, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said," Tie your camel and place your trust in Allah" - Tirmidhi
Lessons from this hadith
It is very important for a Muslim student that he does everything that is necessary for success and then put’s his trust in Allaah when facing the tests of this world.
A common practice which is observed today among muslims is they do are not well prepared and do not study and when they fair poorly the only excuse they give is it was Allah’s will or it was destiny.This is a very wrong attitude to have Prophet(saws) was known for his planning so were the sahabas they were always well prepared to face any type of worldly exams. Do u think they had less faith in Allah as compared to us Or Do u think you understand the religion better than them? (Naudhbillah)?
A muslim student should always be well prepared for his exams and should seek Allah’s help whilst following the prescribed means, in accordance with the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) Strive to attain that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allaah, and do not feel helpless.” (Saheeh Muslim, hadeeth no. 2664)

On the day of Exams
Pack your bags one day in advance
Preparing all required or permitted equipment such as pens, rulers and setsquares, calculators and watches, because being well prepared helps one to answer questions.Essential things such as Hall Tickets/Admit cards etc and other important documents should be packed first and not be done at the last moment to avoid chaos.It is always good to be prepared.
Before Leaving the house
-Please read two units of nafil salah n ask Allah for help
-If possible do some charity even if it is like 1 rupee or else do zikr
-recite the following dua before leaving the house
It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever says – when leaving his house – Bismillaah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allaah, laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah (In the name of Allaah, I put my trust in Allaah, there is no power and no strength except with Allaah), it will be said to him: You are taken care of and you are protected, and the Shaytaan will keep away from him.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 5095
Du’aa’ that may be recited during the exams?
There is no report in the Sunnah which suggests what can be said during the exams. The du’aa’s that are widespread among students and are said during revision or when receiving the exam papers or when stumbling over an answer or when handing in the paper, etc., all have no basis in the Sunnah, either in saheeh reports or da’eef reports. Rather they are all fabricated and are falsely attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
Attributing any such thing to the Sunnah when one knows that it is not part of the Sunnah makes a person one of those who tell lies against the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
There are a few general duas which one may recite
When upset recite this dua
It was also narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: If something upset him, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would say: “Yaa Hayyu yaa Qayyoom bi rahmatika astagheeth (O Ever Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help).” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3524.
A sweet Dua
It was also narrated from Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O Allaah, nothing is easy but that which You make easy and You can make hardship easy if You will.” Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan, 3/255; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 2886.
Dua of Younus(as)
It was narrated that Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The prayer of Dhu’l-Noon when he was in the belly of the fish: ‘Laa ilaaha illa Anta, subhaanaka inni kuntu min al-zaalimeen (There is no god but You, glory to You, verily I was one of the wrongdoers).’ A Muslim never calls upon his Lord with these words concerning any matter, but his prayer is answered.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3505

Salah and fast during Exams
The Salah and Ramadaan fast are the pillars on which Islam is based. Al-Bukhaari (8) and Muslim (16) narrated that Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Islam is built on five (pillars): the testimony that there is no god except Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah; establishing regular prayer; paying zakaah; fasting Ramadaan, and performing Pilgrimage to the House (the Ka’bah).”
Whoever does not pray or fast has abandoned one of the pillars of Islam and has committed a grave major sin. In fact, some of the salaf were of the view that such a one is a kaafir and an apostate – Allaah forbid.
Al-Dhahabi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Kabaa'ir (p. 64):
The believers are unanimously agreed that whoever forsakes the Ramadaan fast when he is not sick and has no other excuse for that is worse than an adulterer or one who is addicted to alcohol. They doubt whether he is a Muslim and they think of him as a heretic and deviant. End quote.
He has an exam that will cover the time of ‘Asr and Maghrib – how should he pray?
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked: Sometimes the time for classes at school comes before the time for prayer, i.e. at twelve for Zuhr and at four-thirty for ‘Asr, and I cannot pray at school because there is no place that is suitable for prayer. Thus I am forced to offer a number of obligatory prayers together at the same time, and sometimes it is more than three obligatory prayers at once. What is the ruling on my prayer? Please advise me, may Allaah reward you with good.
He replied: With regard to joining two prayers that may be joined, there is nothing wrong with that in this case, because it is necessary, such as joining Zuhr and ‘Asr, and Maghrib and ‘Isha’. As for joining ‘Asr and Maghrib, for example, that is not permissible because it is not permissible to delay a prayer beyond its time under any circumstances. Based on that, in this case, if she is afraid that the time for the present prayer that cannot be joined with the following prayer will end, then she should pray it in whatever way she can. So if, for example, she is going to school at the time of ‘Asr, and she cannot pray ‘Asr there, then she should join it with Zuhr at the time of Zuhr, then go to school having done what is required of her. To sum up, it is not permissible for a woman or anyone else to join two prayers that it is not permitted to join, rather one may only join two prayers that it is permitted to join, such as joining Zuhr and ‘Asr, at the time of the earlier or later prayer, and joining Maghrib and ‘Isha’ at the time of the earlier or later prayer, when there is a need for that. End quote from Fataawa Noor al-Darb.

Breaking the fast in Ramadaan because of exams
The Standing Committee was asked: I am going to be tested in Ramadaan for a period of 6 and a half consecutive hours, with a 45 minute break. I did the same test last year, but I could not concentrate because of fasting. Is it permissible for me to break the fast on the day of the test?
They replied: It is not permissible to break the fast for the reason you mentioned, rather that is haraam, because it is not included among the excuses for which it is permissible to break the Ramadaan fast
Vow’s
Whoever makes a vow to do an act of worship such as praying, fasting, giving charity etc must fulfil that vow, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever vows to obey Allaah, let him do so, and whoever vows to disobey Allaah, let him not do so.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6318. This applies whether the vow was connected to something happening or was made in general terms.
It should be noted that we should not make vows, because of the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (6608) and Muslim (1639) from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) disallowed making vows and said: “They do not change anything, all they do is make a miser give [in charity].”
And al-Bukhaari (6609) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah says: ‘A vow does not bring the son of Adam anything that I have not decreed for him, but his vow may coincide with what has been decreed for him, and in this way I cause a miser to spend of his wealth.’”
Cheating in exams
“Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them)”
[al-Fajr 89:14]
The main reason for cheating that is the lack of any religious deterrent, weakness of faith, and the lack of any sense that Allaah is always watching.
Messenger of Allaah SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever cheats us is not one of us.’ This includes cheating in dealing with others and cheating in exams, including English-language exams. It is not permissible for students to cheat in exams in any subject, because of the general meaning of this hadeeth and other similar reports. And Allaah is the Source of strength.”
The harmful effects of cheating include:
1- Cheating is a way that leads to Hell.
2- It is indicative of the mean and evil nature of a person. No one does this except one who is ignoble and does not care about his soul, so he causes it to indulge in that which will cause its doom and destruction.
3- It alienates one from Allaah and from other people.
4- It causes one’s du’aa’s not to be accepted.
5- It causes one to be deprived of barakah (blessing) in one's wealth and one's life.
6- It is indicative of a lack of faith.
7- It is the reason that leads to being overpowered by the oppressors and kaafirs. Ibn Hajar al-Haythami said: “Because of these evil actions – i.e., cheating – that are committed by traders, workers and craftsmen, Allaah caused the oppressors to gain power over them and take their wealth and violate the sanctity of their women. Indeed, He enabled the kuffaar to gain power over them, so they took them prisoner and enslaved them, and made them taste all kinds of torment and humiliation.

Students giving gifts to the Teachers
If a student has completed his studies and will be leaving the school, there is no bribery in this case. But if the teacher-student relationship will continue, there is the fear that this gift may cause the teacher to be biased in favour of that student, so that she may overlook her mistakes and not be fair to her and the other students then this is a type of bribery and should be avoided
After Exams
Advice for students during the summer break
My advice to the young people is as follows:Make use of the break to seek Islamic knowledge which is lacking;uphold the ties of kinship which you have missed out on because you have been busy with your exams; be active in calling your neighbours, relatives and kinsfolk to Islam, as you have missed out on that due to exams.
Keep in touch with good people – “And keep yourself (O Muhammad) patiently with those who call on their Lord (i.e. your companions who remember their Lord with glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon” [al-Kahf 18:28 – interpretation of the meaning]. Do not lose touch with them during the break. It may be useful to take part in programs even if that is with other good people in the area to which you will go if you do not have any of the good people from the university to be with.
Beware of haraam things such as traveling to places of immorality or the lands of kufr, or watching haraam channels. ..Shaikh Salih Al munajjid
We ask Allaah to grant you and us strength and make us succeed in this world and cause us to be among those who are victorious and saved in the Hereafter, for He is the All-Hearing Who answers prayer.
